Mark & Nate Petersen

During this past season of The Change Makers Podcast, Ellen Graf-Martin sat down with Mark Petersen and his son Nate and discussed:

  • philanthropy as a social return on investment,

  • why mentorship is important, and

  • practical ways to increase collaboration between Gen X and Baby Boomers.

Before you listen to this episode, here are three Change Maker Moments from Mark and Nate.

3 Insights From Mark & Nate Petersen

1) Have a Succession Plan

As a father and son duo working together, Mark shares about the importance of succession. The next chapter of his career is really focused on building a succession plan so that their organization can thrive even when he moves on. Most organizations don’t consider this ahead of time, but it is something that needs to be top of my mind in order to have a healthy organization.

2) Know your Audience

In charity and philanthropy, much time is spent on trying to get donations into the organization. By narrowing down a target audience for your organization, you can spend more time on tailoring content to your specific audience, to get more return on your investment. By really knowing who your organization matters to, you can save time and money by going after that group. This is true for every business. Every organization needs to know and understand their target audience.

3) Mentorship is Key

Similar to a succession plan, mentorship also needs to be common in your organization. It might not be the future of the company, but by inviting the younger generation to the table - to help brainstorm ideas and give their input - you help to close the generational gap that typically exists in business. Want to hear the full conversation?
