Get to Know Heather Simmonds

Earlier this year, Heather Simmonds came alongside us as a Marketing and Communications Strategy Consultant. Heather holds an MA in Communications and New Media from McMaster University and has more than 10 years of experience in brand and marketing leadership.

In keeping with our theme for 2022, Stronger, we asked Heather a few questions to help us get to know her better.

What is your "Go-To" when you need help strengthening yourself?

Go-to Quote:

“We choose owning our stories of struggle, Over hiding, over hustling, over pretending. When we deny our stories, they define us. When we run from struggle, we are never free. So we turn toward truth and look it in the eye. We will not be characters in our stories. Not villains, not victims, not even heroes. We are the authors of our lives. We write our own daring ending. We craft love from heartbreak, Compassion from shame, Grace from disappointment, Courage from failure. Showing up is our power. Story is our way home. Truth is our song. We are the brave and brokenhearted. We are rising strong.” - Brene Brown.

Go-to Scripture:

The Lord God has told us what is right and what he demands: “See that justice is done, let mercy be your first concern, and humbly obey your God.” Micah 6:8

My go-to strength soundtracks when I need a little strength boost:

I'm Still Standing (Elton John)

Rescue (Lauren Daigle)

Who Run The World (Girls) (Beyonce)

How has being a part of the Graf-Martin team strengthened you?

This has been a tough season in my personal life and Ellen [Graf-Martin], Dan [Wilcox], and team have reminded me that we do our best work when we lead out of our humanity and lean into love and compassion. They have strengthened me with their sharp skills, encouragement, and genuine kindness.

How have you been able to strengthen our clients?

I lead from the heart and genuinely care about our clients'' success. My empathetic perspective and passion for research allow me to quickly understand clients' needs and to equip them with meaningful big picture solutions, like overarching brand strategy and integrated communications and campaigns planning.

How is Graf-Martin building a stronger non-profit sector?

GM is driving collaboration to create more effectiveness and efficiency in the non-profit sector. They prioritize community and connection, rather than competition. They uphold their clients best interests, even if it's at the expense of "good business."

Heather is in her sweet spot working with teams like Graf-Martin, where she can marry her greatest passion - helping others (especially vulnerable populations) - with her professional skill set - bringing brands to life with strategic storytelling.

On a personal note: Heather loves to run, get outside and enjoy all of the natural wonders the world has to offer, read, and spend quality time connecting with those she loves most.

Heather, we are glad you are a part of our team!!
